In today's podcast, we chatted about what happens in the natural body and in our spiritual body when starvation occurs. Check out this video: VIDEO: What happens to the body and brain when someone starves? This is a very basic video that uses stick figure drawings to get the information across. There is a second one as well: VIDEO #2: What Would Happen If You Stopped Eating?
Both this video set the stage for considering what happens when we stop EATING the food that the LORD GOD provides for us: the Manna from Heaven, The LIVING Word of God = The Bible.
That second video ... pray and ask the LORD to open your "spiritual ears, eyes and understand" to WHAT happens to our spiritual self when we stop consuming (eating) the Food the LORD has provided for us: His Word. Now watch this again: VIDEO #2: What Would Happen If You Stopped Eating?
NOTES FROM TODAY's PODCAST
Yesterday we talked about the purpose of food and the process of eating. We drew parallels between the concept of eating in the natural to eating in the spiritual realm. Eating in the Spiritual: consuming the word of God! That Manna from Heaven that the LORD in his mercy and grace provided us with.
YET, how many people truly see God's Word
as essential for Spiritual Health?
We have got to eat food for our bodies to function, to be the best they can be. Yet, if we are deprived of food, our bodies will shortly cease to function as God designed them to operate. So how or why would a person be faced with starvation. Well, right now, in August 2020, millions around the globe are faced with starvation as a result of the 1st world countries shutting down their economies. Food and supplies that were destined for ports of the poorest of the poor that rely on the generosity of foreign nations and organizations have been unable to get supplies shipped into these ports. Because no one wants another's possibly COVID tainted supplies coming into their border to decimate their population.
So instead the people starve. A recent sad statistic says as the result of COVID, 10K children will die of starvation every month. ARTICLE: 10,000 children per month die from coronavirus-related hunger. Here in America, the food lines are often days longer to get to the front of the line … not hours, days. In the days of COVID, the risk of starvation is genuine, even in first world countries like the United States and Europe. Here is one of the most current articles: COVID-19 Linked Hunger Could Cause More Deaths Than The Disease Itself, New Report Finds.
During wars, not only did the affected countries face possible starvation, but prisoners of war also are put on severe restriction of food. The most extreme cases in the known history of forced starvation by an enemy would have to be Nazi Germany's Concentration Camps.
There is also another form of starvation that we also need to consider: SELF-starvation. Two forms are "hunger strikes" and "anorexia." Mahatma Gandhi regularly did hunger strikes (or willful self starvation) to change the political situation in India. Anorexia is an eating disorder where the person believes they have to stop eating because they view themselves as fat.
So what is starvation??
Starvation is defined as a severe deficiency in caloric energy intake needed to maintain human life. It is the most extreme form of malnutrition. In humans, prolonged starvation can cause permanent organ damage and, eventually, death.
Yes, without the consumption of food, the body wastes away … All functions slow down. The heart beats slower, the lungs become congested, and the breaths more shallow. The brain is especially impacted as thinking becomes lethargic and angry as starvation begins. As starvation takes hold, our body adapts to require less energy to survive. Still, it comes as a cost to the rest of the body: our thoughts become confused, dazed, and we see things that are mirages or figments of our deprived brain. Our bodies waste away through 3 stages, and then there is death. Often death is not from actual starvation. But from other diseases that can overwhelm the compromised imm
une system … for those who are starving: a virus like COVID can kill them off quickly. Over on the Psalms Cast discuss page … there is a video posted about starvation… no, it is not gory, just factual information.
You may be wondering … ANY??? How does this topic of starvation have anything to do with the LORD and God's Word???
Life is so busy, and next week/month/year, it will be busier. There will be more distractions and stuff that will vie for the limited number of hours in a week. There are only 168 hours each week … and most of us spend about ⅓ of those hours sleep, and ⅓ of those hours working a job/career. Which only leaves about 56 hours a week for everything else … hygiene, housecleaning, cooking, taking care of children/family, commuting here and there, yard work, …. Did I miss anything??
Where is the time for getting nourishment … that daily bread from the LORD??
When I was a teenager and realized the amazing treasures in the Bible, I spent probably about an hour a day reading the word and just thinking or journaling about it. Then I had fellowship time mixed in between a small group and Church stuff for another say 4 hours a week … so about 12 hours … which would be about 7% of my weekly hours feeding on God's food. When I went to college, I had a lot more time because I was very focused on studying and had little social life on campus. So maybe 10% or 16 hours a week. Those were sweet, sweet times because my life did not have a lot of extra distractions other than a part-time job for 15 hours a week, school, and study. My love and devotion to the Living God were foremost in my mind. Then the cares of this world hit, and the storms of life knocked me sideways. I fell in with a group of people who were carnal Christian. My quiet meditative life was transformed into hanging out, watching TV, and doing typical worldly teen stuff … and numbing pain by consuming alcohol. My relationship with the LORD was the first thing to change … the more time I spent in this earthy "fun" company, the less was my hunger and desire to seek God with all my mind, heart, and soul. Remember there are only 168 hours in a week.
I choose to spend the majority of my worship and seeking the LORD time engaged in chasing the dream of this life. Yes, I still prayed, but I no longer opened God's Word. My Bible ended up getting packed with my parents belonging when they moved across the US. And I didn't even realize it was gone for over a year. There was no internet back in that stone age nor audio bibles. The only way you had the word was from a physical book of the Bible OR whatever you had memorized in your head. During those high school and college years, I had memorized chapters of the Bible. So when I needed God time, I had go-to verses. I honestly was even aware that I had placed myself on a spiritual starvation diet.
Instead of consuming healthy, nourishing spiritual food, I instead only consumed the caloric-laden junk food of the world. That "carnal/worldly" junk food consisted of the "feel-good," half-truths, deceit, and lies of the spiritual powers of darkness, wickedness, and evil ... direct from their master: Satan.
That junk food kept me sated and numb that something important was missing for the better part of a decade!! Yes, I occasionally would realize something was missing and try to recapture that spiritual intimacy that I had lost … that first love and passion for Jesus. Still, I kept numbing the natural pain with man's recipe for pain relief, namely having alcohol to "take the edge off." Yes, during that season, we were in Church and out of Church… that was a season of moving around the country. I probably would say now that instead of following Jesus, I began to follow the Church… which is markedly different from the true worship of Jesus. It was during those years that I began to see that I was hopelessly lost.
BUT Jesus!! OH, how I rejoice our LORD, who is our REDEEMER, and our SAVIOR is always faithful and always merciful. He never abandoned me, although I abandoned Him. He continued to call my name to call me to Himself.
And He does NOT just do this for me … He does this for any and all who have ears to hear, eyes to see, and a hunger that will never be filled by spiritual JUNK FOOD.
